Helpful for loss
This is a straightforward book, and the age group is very young. The content is fundamental and effectively conveys the loss of someone in their life, and it’s a good point of view for readers. The illustrations are really cute too.
As a teacher, librarian and parent, I highly recommend this book
The media could not be loaded. This is a beautiful story written by an author who truly understands how to help children voice to their feelings. It stands out not only for the beautiful artwork by the illustrator, but through the simple yet powerful concept of teaching children that any response to grief is normal.Losing a family member or pet is one of the most painful experiences a child (of any age) can experience. I'm teaching in high school now and I see the struggles even teens endure. This is why the book stands out. The story is gentle and thoughtful and not overtly didactic like other books out there. This one truly opens the door for discussion when read together with an adult. Please see my video! One final note: it's beautiful and refreshing to see a children's book illustrated by a real person, when the market seems to be flooded by quick AI images. The artwork is really thoughtful and delightful. Overall, 5 stars.
A Healing and Hope-Filled Guide
The media could not be loaded. I'm the grandparent of a 9-year-old who recently almost lost his grandmother. And I'm also a parent who has lost a child. I Can’t Believe They’re Gone is a children’s grief picture book that meets kids where they are. This book addresses a topic that many younger children will unfortunately encounter in their lives. The book validates their feelings while modeling healthy coping. It also provides caregivers with practical language to initiate conversations that foster healing. By using a mouse family and a bear, the story illustrates that sadness and anger show up in different ways for all of us.Grieving is a process, so the book may be read several times to help children heal. At first, they can just read the book without thinking they need to ‘fix’ their feelings. After that, a parent may pause at each mouse’s response to allow their child to process their emotions. We’re all different and experience things in different ways. In that sense, at least, we never really grow up. As one who has experienced this firsthand, I've learned that when helping children process experiences that are painful for us as adults, we can be empathetic because losing a loved one is something we all face at some point in our lives.
