Ghostly Roulette
A Joe the Werewolf Novel
by James Carpenter
About the Book
Ghosts are restless in northern Minnesota. Joe goes on a vacation to a cabin on a lake in northern Minnesota. This cabin is owned by the family of his fellow pack members Peter and Pauline. Joe hopes to have a relaxing time, but that is not to be. On his first night, Joe and Peter join Peter’s brother Parker on a ghost hunt in a local hotel. Not only are the ghosts more solid than usual, they are also angrier. A few days later Parker is found dead with a broken neck.
Although a vampire seems to be a likely suspect, Joe, as he investigates, finds few motives since Parter was a beloved husband and father, well-liked by his fellow ghost hunters, and respected in his business. As the corpses pile up, Joe discovers corrupt werewolves, suspicious vampires, missing wererats, and ghosts who have too much to say and could threaten humanity. Can Joe solve Parker’s murder and prevent ghosts from causing chaos in northern Minnesota?

An urban fantasy that does police procedurals, but mires itself in details
The urban fantasy is full of supernatural entities. Joe is a werewolf agent akin to the FBI, investigating crimes against humanity and working to keep werewolves and vampires (and others) from killing each other (and humans) and keeping their identities safe from humans. Alas, the 'bad' monsters don't care. Which is why Joe finds himself involved in a murder investigation of a friend. The novel reads like a police procedural with no warrants and plenty of no-knock raids, as well as plenty of plot twists. It's not overly grisly, but I found many of the battle scenes to be too short, the 'good' guys winning too easily. If you're into urban fantasy and vampires and werewolves living together in a society, you may enjoy this one. And the police procedural mystery is spot on. My two-star discount is based on style preferences. IMO, the author overdescribes individuals and settings. And the number of names in each scene strained my memory banks more times than not. I also struggled with suspending my disbelief (I know, fantasy) over a plot point, which I won't reveal here. But it's integral to the novel. Add to that the above-mentioned short fight scenes easily won, and I get to three stars.
Can’t wait for the next one in the series!
Loved this book! It’s exciting, funny, and full of action. Joe the Werewolf is such a cool and relatable character, and the story kept me hooked from start to finish. The mix of supernatural drama and humor makes it a really fun read.
