Dark Profiles
Biographies of Serial Killers
by Javier Soto
About the Book
Dark Profiles: Biographies of Serial Killers is a relentless journey into the blackest recesses of the human mind. Through sixty meticulously crafted profiles, this book explores not only the brutal crimes committed by the world’s most infamous serial killers, but also the psychological fractures, personal obsessions, and social failures that birthed them. Edmund Kemper, Luis Alfredo Garavito, Leonarda Cianciulli, Tsutomu Miyazaki, Manuel Delgado Villegas, Charles Sobhraj...
Each profile is not a glorification of monstrosity, but a cold, unflinching look at the creation of human predators. Each chapter dissects the origins, methods, and motivations behind acts of calculated horror, shedding light on both the visible and invisible factors that transform individuals into mass murderers. This Second Revised and Expanded Edition refines the narrative voice and deepens the psychological exploration, offering an even darker, more cohesive experience for true crime readers.

An important crime anthology that is flawed by poor editing
What is compelling about the book is that Soto doesn’t just delve into and recount the crimes of these killers; he gives background. At no point did I ever think he was making excuses for these killers; he doesn’t. However, his details on some of the killers’ backgrounds, especially their childhoods, are important to understanding the motivation of these deviant human beings. An excellent example is his background descriptions of Aileen Wuornos, the woman depicted in the award-winning movie, Monster. This being said, the book is poorly edited. There are missing quotation marks; numerous incorrect pronouns (her instead of he, he instead of her). Here is one of many examples: “She lured little girls with candy, promises of food or toys. She was kind. She was patient. And when he took them to the countryside, to the bush or to vacant lots, he transformed himself.”No matter how good a book is, it cannot escape poor editing. A potentially excellent book, Dark Profiles, with its many errors, ends up mediocre.
