by Albert York
About the Book
When K9 search-and-rescue handler Dannie Bauer and her loyal bloodhound, Forrest, are called in to track a missing teammate, she finds herself chasing not only lost persons but a deadly predator who is always one step ahead. As another teenage girl vanishes, Dannie realizes that the disappearances are linked to a sadistic serial rapist and murderer and zeroes in on a suspect.
Faced with the prospect of more deaths from the killer, she has to answer the question, “How far can you cross the line before the monster you hunt is no longer the one in front of you? ” With the FBI’s Serial Killer and Child Abduction Unit now involved, the hunt intensifies. Very enjoyable read!
First, if you haven’t read Albert York’s biography yet, you definitely should; his background alone was what drew me to this book. The story itself is incredibly compelling—dark and atmospheric, it captures a deep sense of loneliness that is only broken by the protagonist's companion. Since this is a series, I am eagerly anticipating the next installment.
Much More Than Just a Thriller
The Hunter grabs you from the early chapters, but its true power lies in its heroine. Dannie is incredibly alive and multi-layered, with fears, doubts, and an inner strength that forms right before the reader's eyes. I was especially moved by how her bond with her dog was portrayed—it's done with incredible warmth and authenticity. The atmosphere of anxiety builds gradually, without cheap tricks, and the sense of danger never lets up until the very end. Yes, the beginning might seem unhurried, but that's precisely what makes the story more emotionally resonant and genuine. The book leaves a lasting, powerful aftertaste.
