Book Description

Peppeniello Cortesano is a young cook who left Naples to seek his fortune elsewhere, refining his culinary art at the papal court. But fate calls him home when he discovers a letter written by his grandfather before he died: a few mysterious lines that hint at a secret kept in the depths of the city. Returning to Naples is like a trip back in time: the narrow alleys, markets full of life, and that unbreakable bond with street food seem to speak to Peppeniello's heart. But behind the nostalgia lies an ancient enigma. Legend tells of a lost oven, hidden in the bowels of the city, that holds the secret of the first pizza: not just a food, but a symbol Neapolitan identity. Accompanied by the irreverent Silverio and the enigmatic Sofia, Peppeniello enters a world of tunnels, puzzles and secret fraternities. Each step brings him closer to the truth, but also forces him to confront his deepest fears. The journey is not just a physical quest, but a path of transformation that will confront him with difficult choices and personal sacrifices.

Mystery, history and culinary stories

This is a warm story about a young cook that goes back to Naples to follow his family secret. The mix of history, food, and mystery worked super well. The pacing is a bit slow in some parts and some clues are a little too obvious, but the ending is great. If you like culinary stories with some history, you’ll like this book.

a fun and flavorful read

I love how the story blends underground adventures with rich Italian culture and food; it made me want a trip to Naples (and eat a ton of pizza)

History, mystery & magic

This book really caught my attention. It mixes history, mystery, and a bit of culinary magic in a way that brings Naples to life - you can practically savor the city's flavors. I enjoyed following Peppeniello's journey, and even with a few shifts in style, the story kept its edge. As someome who loves collecting fantasy and romance novels, I can say that this read stands out for its down-to-earth storytelling and raw emotion.
