About the Book

Five hours. One city under siege. One father torn between betrayal and love. Zaragoza, March 1838. Joaquín Espés, a weary blacksmith with a war-torn past, is given an impossible choice: sabotage the city's defenses or watch his son die at the hands of his former comrades. As the cannons roar and the bells toll, Joaquín is pulled into the deadliest hours of his life—haunted by broken promises, consumed by guilt, and driven by the only force he has left: a father's love.

Five Hours to Freedom is a powerful historical novel about sacrifice, redemption, and the blurred lines between loyalty and survival. In the darkest moments, even the coldest iron can burn.

A powerful book about honor and fatherhood

Five Hours to Freedom is a novel that stays with you. Carlos Cabezas López is an amazing historian, and a gifted storyteller. This novel presents a very specific conflict: The Cincomarzada of 1838. Our protagonist is Joaquín, a very complex man. He fought with the carlists in the past, but now he is a blacksmith and, more importantly, a father. When his son, Lucas, is kidnapped and forced to take part in this cruel conflict, he must choose between his patriotism and his love for him.The decision is groundbreaking for him (and heartbreaking for us) in this impossibly complex circunstances. This book is all about that: What do you do when your decision saves a dear life but hurts a whole community?Five Hours to Freedom does not provide easy answers, and the author does not try to. It is an amaing read, with powerful, even sour, messages. War is a beast, and nobody is saved from getting hurt by it.My only criticism, maybe, would be on the strictly literary side. The dialogs, specifically. They sound a little flowery for my taste, and that put me a little off in some scenes. But other than that, this is a really solid novel i could recomend to anyone, specially fathers. Give it a go, you won't be dissapointed.

More than just a war story—it's a story of the heart

I was hooked from the first page! Carlos Cabezas López does a fantastic job of bringing 1838 Zaragoza to life. You can almost feel the heat of the forge and the tension in the air as the city is under siege. Joaquín is such a relatable, tragic hero—a man caught between his past and his love for his son. If you enjoy well-researched history mixed with high-stakes personal drama, don't miss this one!
