About the Book

“Dear God, I will never, ever, EVER be like my father. I will never drink. I will never hurt people. I will never make my children scared. I promise. Amen. ” On Easter morning, six-year-old Olivia Parker is on her knees in a cramped Ohio bathroom, wiping vomit off her father’s shirt while he shakes on the toilet. In that moment, she makes a sacred promise: she will grow up to be the opposite of this man.

Never Like My Father, Book 1 of The Daughter of a Drunk series, follows twelve years of trying to keep that impossible vow. Olivia teaches her little brother where to hide when her father’s footsteps turn dangerous, juggles two broken households, shields her mother, and becomes the straight-A “good girl” everyone can rely on. If she’s perfect, maybe the chaos will finally stop. But perfection has a cost.

Revealing the pain and shame of a child of an alcoholic

Never Like My Father paints a vivid picture of the pain and shame children of an alcoholic feel every day. Mr. Kane does a magnificent job of foreshadowing how that pain and shame mutates into the specter that hangs over every child of an alcoholic – that they could turn out to be exactly like their father. This story will resonate with anyone who has dealt with addiction in their family. It is well written and compelling. I highly recommend Exactly Like My Father.

A difficult read with a message of hope

An emotional and rather heavy book. It’s definitely not something you’d call light evening reading. I think for people who grew up in similar environments with parents struggling with addiction, it may trigger difficult associations. Still, the story leaves a sense of hope, showing that even a young girl was able to cope with such a hardship.

Heart-Wrenching Yet Inspiring

Never Like My Father is an incredibly raw and honest look at childhood trauma and the lasting impact of family addiction. The author’s storytelling is so personal and heartfelt that it feels like you’re walking alongside them through every struggle and triumph. Despite the heavy subject matter, there’s a thread of hope and resilience that makes this book inspiring rather than just heartbreaking. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a deeply moving memoir about overcoming difficult family dynamics.
